B.O.A received an honorable mention in Arch Out Loud's Tokyo Vertical Cemetery 2017 competition. The design approach merges the spiritual dimension of traditional funerary rites with the practical requirements of contemporary life. This synthesis is expressed through a modernized, symbolic program.
To create an intimate visual connection between the living city and death, the proposal turns the conventional cemetery section upside down. Its essential rites, the wake, funeral, and cremation, are rooted beneath the soil.
The ashes remain within vertical urn columns for seven days before being transferred to the roots of the central Bodhi tree, symbolically accompanying the human spirit toward Buddhahood.
